Using Limnu

Yes! There are a few ways to add images and other files to a Limnu board.

  • Drag and drop a file from your desktop.
  • Copy and paste an image.
  • Use the Add File button and select from your files or from your photos on a mobile device.

The file types supported include:

  • PDF
  • JPEG
  • PNG
  • GIF
  • SVG
  • Word Document
  • Excel
  • Power Point

All files upload as an image and an image will be created for each page of a multi page document. Use markers, shapes, and sticky notes to mark up the image.

Yes! We have Lines, Ovals, Boxes, and Arrows that you can add to the board.
  • Select the shape you want

  • Select the color and stroke thickness

  • Click and drag to create the shape

Click the shift key after you start drawing to make perfect circles, squares, or vertical and horizontal lines.
Want straight lines instead of our signature fun sketchy look? Go to your profile page and check Straight Lines. This will apply to all shapes.

You can export pieces of your whiteboard that you can see in a viewport (similar to a screenshot). Move and zoom to the section you want to export and then tap the export button (it's under the notes drawer).

You'll get a few export options. Try turning off Opaque Backgrounds to just get your strokes and lines.

Yup, yup, yup!

  • Select the Note or Text icon.
  • Click on the board where you want to type, or drag your cursor to make it the size you want.
  • Start typing or paste text from another document.

On a desktop? Use hotkeys:

N - Note Mode

Shift + T - Text Mode

On smaller devices the Notes & Text are in the tools menu under the Marker icon.

Yes you can! It works great. To get the most out of using a Wacom Tablet with a Limnu whiteboard make sure to check out our hotkeys.

Heck yeah! Take the bull by the horns and be a natural board Leader! When you turn leading on everyone on the board always sees what you see.

How to turn leading on

  1. Go to the person menu at the lower right hand corner of your board.
  2. Select the person icon at the top of the menu.
  3. Select Start Leading (for smaller screens it might just say Leading).

You can lead while the board is in Solo Draw mode (only the admin of the board can draw) or in Collaboration mode (anyone on the board can sketch) so that others can interact with content as you lead them around the board.

Only a board admin can lead. You can give anyone on your board admin access so they can start leading.

We sure do! Hot keys, key commands, keyboard shortcuts—whatever you call them, get the most out of Limnu Whiteboards with these keyboard tricks.

Once you have a team setup it’s super easy to add everyone on your team. You can add individual emails or you can copy and paste a bunch of emails into the box.

Want to know something super cool? You can paste whatever you want into that box and Limnu is smart enough to find the email addresses, so you can export a team directory to a CSV or PDF and then do a massive copy/paste and you’ll see just the emails and can review before inviting.

Have more than a few but not enough to need to export to a directory? Here’s a nifty way to handle it:

Step 1: Start composing an email in your mail app of choice, add everyone that you want to invite…

Step 2: Copy/paste that entire group of people into the address box.

Step 3: Limnu will sort through the data, find the email addresses and you are ready to go!

Check out our video walkthrough to learn how to add a lot of people to your team at once.

Limnu does not currently have an iOS app. What, no App? No Problem!!! Quickly navigate to your Limnu boards page by adding a shortcut to your IOS Home Screen.

Steps to add a shortcut to your Home Screen:

  • 1. Open your Limnu boards page using your Safari browser.

  • 2. At the bottom of the Safari browser select the icon with the arrow pointing up out of the box.

  • 3. Select Add to Home Screen

You can change the name of the board when you first create it, or on the board after it is created.

When you create a new board you can change the board in the New Board window.

You can also change the board after it's been created.

  1. Select the menu on the bottom left of your board
  2. Type the new name
  3. Select the check to save

If you are a member of several plans — maybe you have your own Pro plan and you belong to a couple teams — you can change plans using the arrow next to your name.

Remember: Your boards belong to either your pro account or a team account — for security purposes you can't move boards between these plans.

There are a few ways to get rid of stuff you don't need anymore.

You can use the erase tool — this is great for taking out just a part of your drawing.

You can also select strokes and then hit delete on your keyboard
—or—
by clicking the X in the top left.

Limnu whiteboards are built for collaboration! Invite others to join your board to sketch and brainstorm in realtime.
  • Select Hamburger menu

  • Select Share Board

  • Share with a secure email invite, shared link or code

Is this a team board? All team members can access team boards on their Team Boards page. Team admins can share and add team members when sharing boards.

What is the difference between Email Invites and Shared Link?

Email invites are more secure than a shared link because only the person who receives the email can join the board. The links in email invites only work once so you can be sure it can't be used by others.
Shared links allow anyone with the link to join the board. If you are on a Pro or Team plan you can turn off link sharing at any time.

What is the share code?

If the person you want to invite has a Limnu account, they can use the code in the Enter Share Code section on their Boards page

To learn all about teams, admin and security, please visit the Limnu for Teams page.

Getting everyone on board and managing their security and sharing settings is super easy.
Add, edit, and delete team members anytime you want.

Limnu for Teams allows you to choose administrators, decide who can share boards outside of your team, lock the whole team down tight or open it up for big collaborations. The choice is yours and you can change your mind, anytime.

Check out our video walkthrough to learn about team administration.

Online collaboration is better when you can hear and see the other person - just like you are in the same room.

To start a Call or Join a video conference

  • Step 1: Click on the Person icon on the lower right.

  • Step 2: Board Admin or Team Members select Start Call. Everyone else on the board select Join Call

  • Step 3: Allow Microphone and Camera

Select the microphone icon to mute or unmute yourself before or you enter a call or during the call

Select Leave call to exit the Video Conference call.

Use Pins to tag content on the board so that you, and others, can quickly jump to it.

Use Cases for Pins

  • Easily present content on the board to others. Check out this blog postfor details!

  • Define areas on a board for breakout groups

  • Pin content by date, subject area, homework, action items

  • Sketching options for solving a problem or designing something new? Pin each option.

To add a Pin select Add Pin from the Menu with the three dots.
Open the Pin Menu to jump to a Pin or edit the names.

You can use any device to draw on Limnu—a mouse, a stylus, or even just your fingers. Some things are going to be better than others but we make sure that Limnu works with many different setups. Here is our ranking of options:

  1. A touch screen with a dedicated stylus combo. This includes iPad Pro and Apple Pencil, Microsoft Surface and Pen, Wacom Cintiq and Pen, and so forth. These all provide the best Limnu experience, and they're what we use when we create our #MadeWithLimnu drawings.
  2. A touch screen with a generic capacitive (powered) stylus. If you can't afford the high-end, this is still a good solution. We have an ongoing Stylus Review series on our blog reviewing various styluses that you should check out.
  3. A tablet without a screen. This is like a mouse in that your hand is disconnected from the screen, but it's much better than a mouse because you're not drawing with a bar of soap. Wacom, Huion, VT, and Ugee all make some great and inexpensive tablets.
  4. A pen mouse! We just recently discovered these. Think of a Wacom tablet and pen... but without the tablet. The pen mouse has all the same internals as a mouse, but it's in the shape of a pen. It can take a little time to get used to, but once you catch on it can be a great tool. Grab one from Amazon.
  5. A touch screen with an unpowered stylus. We rank this below screenless tablets and pen mice because we've found it's actually harder to draw with those cheap styluses with soft rubber tips.
  6. A touch screen with a finger. You'd think pointing directly with your finger instead of a stylus would be better, but it turns out you have less control that way. And since your hand is closer to the screen, you can see less of what you're drawing.
  7. A mouse or a laptop trackpad. As we've mentioned before, drawing with a mouse is like drawing with a bar of soap. And a laptop trackpad is tiny, imprecise, and awkward. You're probably not going to be happy with your drawings when you use either of these. You can get great screenless tablets for under $20 nowadays, so there's really no reason to bother with a mouse or trackpad.

If you are using a desktop or tablet with a keyboard, you can use the keyboard shortcuts as well. See all shortcuts ›

Troubleshooting

If you are using a current version of Chrome there might be an issue with WebGL support.

Here are three quick things you can check:

  1. Go to chrome://settings/, scroll to the bottom and click Show advanced settings..., and make sure Use hardware acceleration when available in the System category is checked and turned on.
  2. Visit http://get.webgl.org/ to verify whether you have WebGL working, and if not it'll have a link to a support website.
  3. Recently, Chrome seems to have blacklisted some 3D graphics hardware that was previously approved. You can work around this by going to chrome://flags. Look for a setting called Override software rendering list and make sure it is enabled. (You'll need to restart Chrome after changing this setting.) After you've enabled it and restarted, the flag should look like this:

chrome-override-software-rendering

If none of that gets you going quickly, please let us know and we'll help you out.

Suddenly find yourself stuck in zoom mode? If you are using a stylus with a button on the side this is likely the culprit.
To fix this change your stylus settings so the side button is disabled.
Check out this example of how to disable side button for a Wacom pen in the Wacom Desktop center:
Not using a stylus with a side button but still stuck in zoom mode? Shoot us an email to let us know.
When you add a file (image, document, PDF, etc.) to your whiteboard a pin will automatically be added. Pins allow you to quickly navigate to content on your board. But. sometimes people don't want pins automatically added.
Follow these steps to stop Pins from automatically being added to the board on content:
  • 1. On your Boards Page select the drop down menu in upper right

  • 2. Select Profile

  • 3. Uncheck Add pins to uploaded content

  • 4. To get back to your boards select My Boards or Team Boards from the drop down menu in the upper right.

Yeah, we know. Limnu uses cookies to store your sessions. Unfortunately this means that when Safari is in Private mode on your computer or mobile device you won't be able to login and use Limnu. Switch to the regular Safari browser and you'll be good to go.

Is your board black or gray when it's not supposed to? Are you unable to draw on the board or see other collaborator's strokes? Is there a small frowning face in the upper left corner of your board?
Here are things to do to try to fix it:
  • 1. Ensure "Hardware acceleration" is turned on in your browser and/or your device. This article explains how to check.

  • 2. Switch to a different browser (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Safari)

  • 3. Close other browser tabs - especially ones using a lot of graphics (e.g. video games).

  • 4. Close any applications that may be using a lot of CPU or are graphics heavy.

If none of these work please contact us using the support form below. Please include what operating system and browser versions you are using.
